4 cops, 1 journo jailed for graft, mugging

A court here on Wednesday sentenced four policemen and one journalist to ten years’ imprisonment each for extortion and mugging at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in 2015.
The convicts are: Assistant sub-inspectors M Aminul Islam Rana and M Shah Alam, constables Raja Babu Raj and M Ashiqul Islam Ashiq, and
Pavel Mahmud alias Tareq Mahmud, a journalist of Saptahik Motprokash.
While the court acquitted another accused of the case M Nazmul Hasan Mamun of the charge.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each. Otherwise they have to suffer two more months’ imprisonment. According to the prosecution, the five convicts, identifying themselves as policemen, snatched gold ornaments, Tk 2.20 lakh, two mobile phone sets and one private car from one Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, plaintiff of the case, at Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on September 17, 2015.
Later, police recovered the private car from Kosaibari in Khilkhet area of the city.
Following the incident, Saiful filed a case with Airport Police Station on September 18.
On December 23, Sub-Inspector Ali Akbar of Airport Police Station, also the investigation officer, submitted the charge sheet. After examining the records and witnesses, Dhaka District and Sessions Judge SM Kuddus Jaman handed down the verdict.
