At least four villagers, including a minor boy, were reportedly killed and 18 others injured after Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members opened fire on locals people at Baharampur village in Gofua Union under Haripuir upazila of Thakurgaon district on Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as Nabab Ali, son of Nazrul Islam, 35, Sadek Islam Miah, 45, son of Jahir Uddin, Joynul, 12, son of Nurul Islam, and Joygun, 50, wife of Kalu Miah, from Ruhia village in Haripur upazila, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent quoting locals.
However, the death toll might go up as 18 critically injured people were admitted in different hospitals.
Even BGB officials confirmed about the death of three locals in firing as the villagers carried out the attack on border guard members during seizure of some ‘smuggled’ cows.
But locals claimed that the BGB men had taken their cows from them after suspecting the cows as smuggled. Although they showed their receipts and tokens of auction.
Local Union Parshad Members Humayun Kabir confirmed the media about the dead of persons, including Joygum while District Intelligence Officer (DIO-1) Nazmul Alam called Joygun clinically dead.
To a query, Nazmul replied that 18 people, including a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee, were admitted to different hospitals and clinics with critically bullet injuries.
Moniruzzaman, Superintendent of Police of Thakurgaon, told The New Nation on Tuesday evening, “Now the situation is under control of the law enforcers.”
A clash ensued around 11:30am when BGB men, numbering eight to 10, were taking away four cattle from one Habibur Rahman at Bohorrompur village suspecting that the cows were smuggled from India, said Abdul Quddus, an eye witness.
