The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police has arrested four persons including the mastermind of the gang who stole the original documents of transport and extortion.
At that time, original copies of stolen registrations, fitness certificates and tax tokens of various buses were seized from them.
Additional DIG Imam Hossain gave this information in a press conference at Malibagh CID office on Sunday (July 17).
He said, on Saturday noon, Rakib Miah alias Tufan, Md. Shukur Ali, Md. Hriday Hossain and Md. Shamim were arrested from Mohammadpur area.
The stolen bus’s registration certificates, fitness certificate and tax tokens were seized from them. In order to hide their identity for a long time, the arrested people stole mobile phones from different residential areas of Dhaka city and collected a huge amount of money by making calls through the Bikash agents. The bus owners were hostages to the gang. They boarded passenger buses of Mirpur Link, Shikar Paribahan, Khajababa Paribahan, Prajapati Paribahan and Rabrab Paribahan plying in Dhaka city since 2020 and stole the registration certificates and other documents of the bus in a fancy manner.
He said that they collected the phone numbers of car owners, managers and drivers and demanded taka 10,000 for each stolen car. When the owners initially refused to pay, the gang threatened to set fire on the vehicles, damage it and kill them. Unable to ply the bus on the road without documents, the bus owners contacted through mobile phones provided by the gang The gang received the money and returned some of the vehicle’s documents and withheld some others.
Being fed up with their torture, the buses owners at last reported the matter to different police stations in the capital and filed a general diary. But as there was no result, the bus owners informed the matter to the CID police.
After investigation, the gang was identified and arrested, CID officials added.
