Adulterated food: 4.5m BD men at health risk

More than 4.5 million people in the country are at health risk for consumption of adulterated and contaminated food. In worldwide more than 600 million people are getting sick for food adulteration, while four lakh people die every day due to food adulteration related infection, said ‘Safe Food and Consumer Production Movement, Bangladesh (SFCPM, BD).
The voluntary organization for food and consumer product said it at a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club on Wednesday.
The organization also demanded implementation of ‘Food Safety Act 2013’ in order to protect public health.
In the human chain, Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Jakir Ahmed said, all kinds of foods in the country are adulterated. The businessmen and producers are adulterating food for more profit. In absence of handling with iron hand now, it has become epidemic.
He also said, the holy Ramadan is coming. It is time to supply safe food for the people of the country. He further urged the authority to implement the ‘Food Safety Act 2013’ and ‘Formalin Control Act 2015’.
National Awami Party (NAP) Secretary General M. Golam Mustafa Bhuyan said, Bangladesh is atop in South Asia for food adulteration.
In South Asia about 150 million people are suffering from various diseases for food adulteration.
According the health directorate of Bangladesh, sixty per cent of the population are the kidney patients. For consuming chemical mixed food they are suffering from such type of diseases, said SFCPM, BD.
The programme was presided over by the organization Chief Executive Kamaruzzaman Bablu.
In the programme, Jatiya Krishak- Sramik Mukti Andolan Joint Secretary Md Manzur Hossain Esa, SFCPM, BD Secretary Asaduzzaman Azam, SFCPM, BD Senior Vice-President Shahidul Islam, Treasurer Md Mosharef Hossain Sikdar, Organisation Secretary Faruk Alam, Programme Co-coordinator Shamsul Arefin, among others were present.
