4.5 kg gold bars seized at HSIA

Members of the Customs Intelligence on Monday rescued 40 gold bars weighing about 4.5 kg from inside the wash room of an aircraft of Bangladesh Biman.
The market value of the recovered gold bars is around Tk3.24 crore, the intelligence sources said.
Mohammad Fakhrul Alam, Director General of the Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation, told the journalists that the intelligence team headed by Deputy Director Ahmedur Reza Chowdhury recovered the gold bars.
“We received information about the gold smuggling from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates via Chittagong on a Bangladesh Biman flight through Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport,” he said.
Based on the information, the intelligence team took position in front of boarding bridge No. 10 of the airport, he added. Bangladesh Biman flight BG-128 (Akash Veena) from Abu Dhabi landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12:32 PM on the day.
Later, the customs intelligence team entered the aircraft by completing necessary procedures and recovered the gold bars, the DG said.
No one was arrested in this connection.
Fakhrul said a case has been filed at the airport police station under the provisions of the Special Powers Act, 1974 and the Customs Act, 1969.
