The much- awaited third seaport in southern region ‘Payra’ in Patuakhali is going to start its operation from today (Monday). A mother vessel, MV Fortune Bird, from china will anchor at the port with 53 thousand tons of stone for
Padma bridge constructions. Muhammad Rezaul Karim, secretary of Payra Sea Port told New Nation on Sunday that China mother vessel would anchor at the deep sea at 11.00am from where lightering vessel will unload the goods.
A one-lakh square foot warehouse, 6km-long four-lane road for connecting Payra with Barisal-Kuakata highway, and 94lakh cubic meter dredging to maintain navigability at the port have already been done, he said.
Sources said, “Some limited scale infrastructures such as pontoon, crane and security building have already been developed on a 16-acre piece of land. The necessary work for lightering from big vessels has also been completed.
Initially, the port will handle loading and unloading of food grains, fertiliser and cement.
“The full-fledged port activities in Payra will start by 2023. And then it will have the capacity to house 75,000 containers,” they said.
