383 MW power to be generated in next 30 months

BSS, Dhaka :State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said the government signed deal with two foreign companies to set up a natural gas based 383MW Combined Cycle Power Plant at Bibiyana to mitigate the high demand for electricity.”The power plant will be installed with the best quality of technology to generate 383MW within the stipulated period,” he said this on Monday while speaking at the signing ceremony of power plant as the chief guest at Mukti Hall in the city.The state minister said the government solved a lot of problems related to power and energy under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”Bangladesh is an energy starved country and we need more and more power and energy to fulfill our vision-2021,” Nasrul Hamid stated.Secretary of power division M Monowar Islam, , chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) AR Khan and chairman of BPDB Abduhu Ruhullah spoke at the contract signing ceremony as the special guests.State-owned Power Development Board (PDB) signed a contract with a joint venture firm Spain based Isolux Ingenieria and Korea based Samsung C& T Corporation to set up 383MW Bibiyana South combined cycle power plant project.M Zahirul Haque, secretary of BPDB, Jose Lusi Dago Elora, general manager of Isolux Ingenieria and Sung Ki Na, general manager of Samsung C& T Corporation signed the contract on behalf of their respective sides.According to the deal, the project cost has been estimated at US$ 388.96 million, while the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) value of US$ 288.26 million. Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will implement the project from its own resources.The gas-fired combined cycle power plant project’s total net generation capacity will be 383MW through its combination of simple cycle and combined cycle units, it said. Of the plants, the simple cycle unit will have 252.264MW capacity, while the combined cycle unit will be of 131.246MW. The power project will get gas from the Bibiyana gas field.The electricity production cost in the project will be only Taka 1.13 kilowatt per hour (kWh).The project’s gas turbine, steam turbine, generator and other main equipment will come from Germany, Belgium, USA, Spain and China. The plant’s energy efficiency is expected to be 53.37 percent.
