More than 35,000 people, including women, are involved with social afforestation to change their fortune side by side with improving environment, ecology and bio-diversity in Rangpur division.
The information was disclosed at a concluding and prize distribution ceremony of a fortnight-long ‘Divisional Wood, Fruit and Medicinal Tree Fair -2017’ held on Zila School ground here on Wednesday afternoon.
The district administration, Social Forestry Division and Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) jointly organised the fair to create public awareness on importance of tree plantation.
Deputy Inspector General of Police for Rangpur Range Khondker Golam Faruk attended the concluding ceremony as the chief guest with Divisional Forest Officer Rafikuzzaman Shah in the chair.
Deputy Director of the DAE SM Ashraf Ali, Assistant Zonal Forest Conservator Dr Prantosh Chandra Roy, Metropolitan Agriculture Officer Dr Saiful Arefin, owner of ‘Rasul Nursery’ Ambia Islam, addressed as special guests.
In his speech, Rafikuzzaman Shah informed that huge number of saplings of fruit, wood and medicinal plants worth Taka 34 lakh was sold in the fair.
“The Department of Forest has taken steps for improving environment and ecology in Rangpur division where saplings of fruit, wood and medicinal plants worth Taka three lakh were distributed free of costs this year,” he said.
Asharf Ali said massive tree plantation has become imperative to improve environment, ecology and bio-diversity and save many living species of animals, birds, insects, aqua animals including fishes from extinction amid changing climate.
The chief guest laid emphasis on planting saplings of different types of plants on fallow lands, premises of offices, educational and other institutions, roadside and open places to increase the country’s total forest area.
Tree plantation not only improves environment, but also meets nutritional demand of people along with bringing economic benefits and reducing risks of natural disasters,” Khondaker Golam Faruk said.
