Thousands of passengers were stuck in a 35 kilometre tailback on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway on Thursday.
The tailback stretched from Meghna-Gumti Bridge toll plaza to Jinglatoli in Daudkandi upazila, said our correspondent quoting Abdullah, Sub-Inspector of Eliotgonj Highway Police outpost.
The jam started after crossing Chandina towards Dhaka, said Shamsuddin, a passenger of Asia Line.
Hundreds of vehicles, including cattle-laden trucks, were seen stranded on both sides of the bridge for hours.
Cattle traders were looking anxious as most of the cattle fell sick for unavailability of fodder.
Besides, thousands of trucks, covered vans and goods carrying vehicles created pressure on the highway towards Dhaka.
However, pressure on the Meghna Bridge might be light from the Thursday night, as vehicles were slowly moving on both sides of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, said Alamgir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Bhaberchor highway outpost in Munshiganj.Nazrul Islam, Superintendent of Regional Highway Police, said the tailback on the busiest national highway started on Tuesday and there has been no respite so far.
