35 chargesheeted in Kibria murder case

After six years and eight months of the gruesome grenade attacks on an Awami League (AL) rally at Habiganj, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) submitted a supplementary charge sheet to a court yesterday accusing 35 people.

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, former state minister for home Lutfuzzaman Babar, suspended Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Huq Chowdhury and Habiganj Municipality Mayor GK Gous were made accused in the charge sheet.
Former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria and four others were killed and many injured in the grenade attacks on a rally of local AL at Baidderbazar in Habiganj on January 27, 2005. Two cases — one for murder and the other under explosive act — were lodged.
CID’s assistant superintendent of police (ASP) and investigation officer of both the murder and explosive cases submitted the charge sheet to the court of Senior Judicial of Habiganj Nishat Sultana.
The charge sheet will be forwarded to District and Sessions Judge’s Court of Habiganj entrusted with holding trial of explosive cases. Those accused in the murder case were also made accused in the charge sheet in the explosive case. This is the third charge sheet in the explosive case. In the first charge sheet, 10 persons were made accused while 26 in the second and 35 in the third. Eight accused of 10 in the first charge sheet are in jail while two others are still at large.
A total of 11 accused in the explosive case went into hiding. They are: Maulana Tajuddin, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Mufti Abdul Hai, Mohammad Ali, Md Badrul, Mohibur Rahman, Kajol Mia, Harris Chowdhury, former adviser to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, and Hafez Maulana Yahiya.
Three persons were excluded from the charge sheet as addresses of two, Yusuf Bin Sharif and Abu Bakar alias Abdul Karim, could not be found while the other, Ahsan Ullah Kazol, died in India.
Of the accused in the Kibria murder and explosive cases, 15 are now at different jails. They include suspended Sylhet City Corporation mayor Ariful Huq Chowdhury, Habiganj Municipality Mayor GK Gous, Hafez Syed Naim Arif Nimu, Badrul Alam Mizan, former state minister for home Lutfuzzaman Babar, Mizanur Rahman Mithu, Pakistani national Abdul Majed Bhatt, Maulana Shaikh Abdus Salam, Abdul Jalil, Shaikh Farid alias Maulana Shawkat Osman and Delwar Hossain Ripon.
Eight people are now on bail. They are: AKM Abdul Kayyum, Joynal Abedin Jalal, Jamir Ali, Joynal Abedin Momin, tajul Islam, Sahed Ali, Selim Ahmed and Ayet Ali.
