At least 35 of the BNP mayor candidates have lost their deposits among 200 or more such party aspirants defeated in the just concluded municipal elections. There are two Awami League candidates, too, who have forfeited their deposit money.
In addition, at least 200 mayor candidates of 18 other parties taking part in the polls and 250 independent contestants have fared quite as badly. The data has emerged from the initial result reports sent to the Election Commission by the returning officers.
EC Deputy Secretary Shamsul Alam of the panel’s division in charge of conducting elections said the various amounts of deposit money for different categories of posts forfeited by the candidate would go to the national exchequer.
“A candidate loses the deposit if he or she fails to get one-eighth of the votes cast,” he said.
The data for 200 municipalities show 35 BNP candidates have lost their deposits. And 29 of them got less than 1,000 votes. Three of them even failed to cross the 100-mark.
The lowest number of votes a BNP candidate got was 84. The Awami League has won by huge margins in the 34 of the 35 municipalities where the BNP candidate lost their deposit.
