Three thousand four hundred marginal and poor farmers of the region have been brought under the coverage of incentive for farming various Rabi crops in the current winter season.
Of the total, highest 1200 farmers are in Sylhet, 400 in Moulvibazar, 1,000 in Habiganj and 800 in Sunamganj districts, sources from the DAE, Sylhet Division, informed yesterday. Sources said 200 farmers received the assistance for maize cultivation, 600 for mustard and 400 for mung bean in Sylhet while all the 400 selected farmers of Moulvibazar were given incentive for growing mung bean.
In Habiganj, 600 mustard and 400 mung farmers got the assistance as well as in Sunamganj, 100 maize, 600 mustard and 100 groundnut farmers are under the programme.
Besides, 500 poor cultivators in Sunamganj were given 4,000 packs of winter vegetable seeds free of cost.
Under the programme, a farmer has been given 5.0 kgs of seed and 30 kgs of fertiliser for one bigha of land.
Sources said about 75,000 hectares of land undertaken for the farming of different winter crop cultivation in Sylhet division this year. A vast land of the division has been brought under mustard, wheat, potato, sweet potato, onion, ginger, chilli, cinamon, gram, mung, black gram, motor, French bean, maize, ginger, turmeric, lentil, khesari, pea and sugarcane cultivation.
Coordinated Development Initiative’ programme starts
A special programme styled ‘Coordinated Development Initiative’ (CDI) has been started in all the four districts of Sylhet Division for overall development of a particular area. It would help achieving the target of reaching the required materials and service for education, sanitation and nutrition to the rural poor, a number of locals and officials said.
The Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet Md Jamal Uddin Ahmed, who is steering the programme, said, “The concerted and joint efforts by some core departments would help us materialising the prime goals”. The work plan had been set through consultation with the division and district-level officials, the official said, adding, “The work plan has been set as survey and service basis”.
“We have already started the activity in one pilot union in each of the districts. These include, Fulbari in Golapganj Upazila, Sylhet; Konokpur in Sadar Upazila, Moulvibazar; Purbo Pagla in Dakshin Sunamganj Upazila, Sunamganj and Nizampur in Sadar Upazila, Habiganj. Now activities in one union in each upazila would be started every month”, he said.
