Thirty four out of 53 Bangladesh missions abroad have failed to achieve their respective export target for the
last fiscal year (2014-15).
The key Bangladesh missions like the ones in Washington, Berlin, London, Paris, Madrid, Ottawa, Rome and the Hague have failed to achieve their export targets for last fiscal year while some other important missions-Riyadh, Canberra, Dubai, Brasilia, Pretoria and New Delhi-have been able to reach their targets for the 12-month period.
The overall export earnings for the FY15 period amounted to $ 31,198.45 million against the strategic target of $ 33,200 million, showing a fall of 6.03 percent over the strategic target.
Of the 53 Bangladesh missions, 19 met their respective export targets set for the period, according to the latest statistics provided by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
The 19 well-performing missions are in Canberra, New Delhi, Dubai, Riyadh, Brasilia, Pretoria, Cairo, Islamabad, Manila, Athens, Yangon, Nairobi, Tashkent, Kathmandu, Rabat, Thimpu, Male, Baghdad and Brunei.
Of the 34 missions that could not achieve their targets for the last fiscal (FY15), exports still marked a rise for 18 of them over the corresponding period of the previous fiscal (2013-14). These missions are in Washington, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, The Hague, Stockholm, Tokyo, Singapore, Geneva, Brussels, Beijing, Muscat, Mexico City, Beirut, Tripoli, Moscow and Kualumpur.
However, 16 missions-Berlin, Ottawa, Ankara, Seoul, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Tehran, Bangkok, Kuwait, Colombo, Amman, Doha, Port Luis, Manama, Hanoi and Lisbon-saw exports decline during the last fiscal compared to the same period of the previous fiscal (2013-14).
The EPB figures revealed that out of the 17 Bangladesh missions having commercial wings, only four have achieved their export targets while 13 others could not achieve their respective targets.
The four missions with commercial wings, which achieved their respective export target, are in Canberra, New Delhi, Dubai and Yangon.
Although the remaining 13 commercial wings could not achieve the target, the earnings of 10 of them except Berlin, Tehran and Ottawa still saw increase in the last fiscal over the July-June period of 2013-14 fiscal. These 10 missions are in Washington, London, Paris, Tokyo, Madrid, Brussels, Beijing, Moscow, Geneva and Kualalampur.
The 19 Bangladesh missions that succeeded in achieving their targets for the last fiscal accounted for $ 2,326.22 million while the export earnings of the remaining 34 missions, which failed to achieve their target, totalled $ 28,135.03 million.
The highest earnings over the 12-month period, some $ 5,850.59 million – almost one-fifth of total exports – were registered by the Washington mission, followed by the mission in Berlin which accounted for $ 5,012.45 million and London $ 3,438.56 million. The strong showing from EU member states continued with the Madrid mission fetching $ 1,753.86 million during the last fiscal year. The next was the Bangladesh mission in Italy, which earned almost $ 1,387.67 million, followed by missions in Ottawa and The Hague, with approximately $ 1,038.07 million and $ 1,453.43 million respectively. The New Delhi mission managed to fetch only $ 527.16 million.
