Md. Zahidul Azad, Chief Judiciary Magistrate of Bagerhat, in a judgment delivered on Wednesday, convicted 34 local BNP leaders and activists to suffer rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and to pay a fine of Tk.5 thousand each in default to suffer simple imprisonment for 3 months under Speedy Trail Act on the charges of their involvement in 2 separate criminal offences.
At the time of delivering the judgment 22 convicted persons were present in the court and the rest are absconding. Some of the convicted persons are Prof. Ali Reza Babu, former Secretary General of Bagerhat district unit of BNP, Abdur Rob Dakua, and Shaheen Dakua (2 brothers MAH. Selim, former BNP MP of Bagerhat Constituency-2 and Abdus Salam, President of Bagerhat district BNP) and Basarat Hawladar, UP Chairman of Gotapara under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.
The prosecution story in short, is that on August 10 in the year 2013 BNP leaders and activists of Ku-koramara village within Bisnupur Union under Bagerhat Sadar Upazil attacked the houses belong to Awami League leaders and activist of the same village, ransacked them and set fire on 2 motor cycles. 23 out 95 charge sheeted accused persons of the case were convicted.
On October 20 in the same year the portrait of the premier installed in an AL office, situated at Mukkhait crossing (Mor) within Gotapara Union under the same Upazila was ransacked by the local BNP leaders and activists. 12 out of the total charge sheeted 112 accused persons of this case were convicted.
