‘3,393 posts of doctors remain vacant in public medical colleges, hospitals’

As many as 3,393 posts of doctors including principals, vice-principals and professors remain vacant in public medical colleges and hospitals, Health Minister Mohammad Nasim said. Replying to a scripted query from treasury bench member AFM Bahauddin Nasim (Madaripur-3), the health minister said on Thursday there are 8,340 posts of doctors including principals, vice-principals and professors in public medical colleges and hospitals across the country.Of them, he said, 3,393 posts of doctors remain vacant. Five posts of principals out of 23 are vacant, while one post of vice-principals out of 15 remains vacant, Nasim said.
He said 282 posts of professors out of 604; 379 posts of associate professors out of 927; 519 posts of assistant professors out of 1381; one post of senior lecturer out of eight posts, four posts of junior lecturers out of 32; 151 posts of senior consultants out of 533; 1856 posts of junior consultants out of 3508, 114 posts of the UHFPO/equivalent posts out of 941; and 81 posts of other doctors out of 368 remain vacant in public medical colleges and district, upazila and union hospitals across the country.
The health minister said giving promotion to different posts through the Divisional Promotion Committee (DPC) and Superior Selection Board (SSB) is a continuous process. “The government is active to fill up the vacant posts through the DPC and the SSB,” he said.
Responding to another question raised by Awami League lawmaker Md Faridul Haque Khan (Jamalpur-2), the health minister said the government has taken various effective steps to expand developed and effective medical education management.
Nasim said the government has taken initiatives to establish Chittagong Medical University and Rajshahi Medical University apart from the existing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for development and expansion of post graduate medical education.
“The cabinet has already approved in principle the draft law for setting up the two medical universities in Chittagong and Rajshahi,” he said. The health minister said there are 29 public medical colleges across the country for expanding medical education at graduate level, while the MBBS education activities will commence in two more medical colleges-one in Mugda in Dhaka and another in Habiganj-from the next academic year. He said the government is also encouraging private sector for expansion of medical education. “Permission has been given so far for setting up 66 private medical colleges which widened the scope for medical education,” he said. Nasim said six medical colleges are being run under the supervision of Bangladesh Army.
