Bangladesh had been fighting an uphill battle against a massive outbreak of dengue this year. The large number of patients put a severe strain on the country’s overwhelmed medical system. But the situation has been improving in recent weeks with fewer new cases and deaths being reported every day.
Since January, 88,660 people were hospitalised with dengue, most of them in Dhaka. Of them, 86,964 went home after full recovery.
Currently 1,460 patients, including 524 in Dhaka, are being treated at hospitals. The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research received reports of 236 dengue-related deaths since the beginning of this year. It has reviewed 136 cases so far and confirmed 81 people had died of dengue.
