Incessant rain, onrush of water from upstream: 3,33,000 hectares of Aman field damaged in Rangpur

Flash flood triggered by incessant rain and onrush of water from the upstream over the last one week has caused massive havoc to a vast area of Aman paddy field in eight districts under Rangpur division.
Around 3,33,000 hectares of Aman field have been damaged due to flood water under the division over last one week, making the farmers apprehensive about achieving their desired output of the crop this season.According to DAE official sources the loss would be around Tk 690 crore.
Expressing apprehension farmers alleged that many farmers of the region would not be able to transplant Aman seedlings again on their land due to scarcity of saplings and shortage of time. A good number of them might have to cultivate Rabi crops on their lands instead of Aman paddy, they added.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said Aman paddy was cultivated on some 9,89,308 hectares of land this year in eight districts under the division. The districts are Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh. Around one-third of the cultivated Aman field has been inundated by flood water, sources also said.
Manik, a farmer of Char Dhusmara at Kawnia upazila in Rangpur district said He took loan from a local money lender for Aman farming this season. But the flood submerged his Aman paddy field on two bighas. His entire paddy field got perished due to flooding. Now He is worried as he will not be able to repay his loan, he apprehended.
According to DAE, Rangpur official sources necessary steps will be taken so that the affected cultivators of the region can transplant Aman saplings again to recoup their losses.
