322 people killed in accidents during Eid-ul-Azha

At least 322 people were killed and 759 injured in 272 accidents in road, railways and waterways accidents during the Eid-ul-Azha, according to a report prepared by the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.
Aamong them, 254 were killed and 696 injured in 205 road accidents.
The association published the report on Wednesday at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the capital. It compiled the incidents of the past 13 days between August 28 and September 9.
During the period, 43 people were crushed under trains and 25 others were killed while 63 injured in 15 waterways accident.
While presenting the report, PWAB Secretary-General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury said that the number of accidents and casualties were lower when people were leaving the capital and other districts to celebrate the Eid at home or other places.
He said that in 2016, a total of 248 people were killed and 1,056 injured in 193 road accidents, seven were crushed under trains while 10 killed in waterways accidents during Eid-ul-Azha.
According to the report, buses were engaged in 37 per cent road accidents, trucks and pick-up vans in 35 per cent, three-wheelers, easy bikes and motorcycles in 23 per cent and other vehicles in five per cent accidents.
He also described that about 39 per cent accidents occurred due to pedestrian-related causes, 33 per cent were caused by head-on collision and 13 per cent by losing control over the steering.
