Joynal Abedin Khan :The number of road accidents has been increasing throughout the country in recent days. The unabated road mishaps are taking away peoples’ lives everyday. Reckless driving, plying of unfit transports and lack of monitoring continue to road accidents.People are terrified having seen the recent fearful accidents on roads and highways across the country.So far, at least 176 people were killed and over two hundred others injured in last five days. Of them, 32 people were killed on Friday while 29 others died n Thursday.According to media report, 26 people were killed on Wednesday, more than 21 on Tuesday and 71 on Monday.On the other hand, road accidents caused nearly a death an hour last year, according to a study. In the study released at a press conference in the capital in April, Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a commuters’ association, reported that 8,589 people had died in road accidents across the country in 2014.In capital, Sohel Rana, 32, a constable of special branch (SB), was killed as a passenger bus knocked his motorcycle at Karwan Bazar area in city around 2:30pm, said Tejgaon Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazharul Islam.The accident took place in front of MRS Bhaban of BRB Cables at Karwan Bazar in the afternoon, the OC said. Meanwhile, motorcyclist Mujibur Rahman, 53, was killed and another one injured as a truck knocked them on the Kanchpur Bridge in city around 11:00am.Ready made garments (RMG) worker Nasrin Akhter, 19, was killed and two others were injured at Kuril area in city around 5:00am.A youth was killed when a bus ran over him at Shewrapara area in city around 8:00am.A 9-year old girl, Sumaiya, daughter of one Asad, from Chittagong district sadar, was drowned in Ichhamati River at Dohar Upazila of the district.In Gazipur, at least five people were killed and five others injured when a covered van collided head-on with a ‘Leguna’ (human hauler) in the city around 7:30am. Of the deceased four are identified as ‘Leguna’ driver Saidur Rahman, 20, his helper Sohel Mia, 28, and two passengers Moni Akher, 25 and Selina Akhter, 32, and.In Madaripur, at least five people were killed and eight others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus at Pathuria par in Kalkini upazila around 1:30pm. Police said the identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.In Tangail, at least three people including a woman were killed and 10 others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Tangail highway at Sohagpara of Mirzapur at around 12:30am last night.Of the deceased, four are identified as Sahanul begum, 30, and Rokonuzzaman, 25.In Nilphamari: one Aiyub Ali, 27, was killed when a tractor turned turtle on himself at Haroa area of Nilphamari town around 9:00am.In Bogra, a passer-by Mostafizur Rahman Bulu, 50, was killed and two others were injured as a microbus rammed a human hauler on Bogra-Naogaon highway at Choumuhuni Bazar under Dupchanchia Upazila of the district around 12:00pm.Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector of Dupchanchia Thana Abu Musa and a microbus driver were injured as a police pick-up and a microbus collided at Taluk of the upazila around 10:00am.In Barisal, motorcyclist Nasir Uddin, 30, was killed and two others were injured as a passenger bus knocked the vehicle on Dhaka-Barisal highway at Kotoksthol under Gaurnadi Upazila of the district around 11:30am.In Feni, an unidentified person was killed falling down from a running bus at Fatehpur level crossing under the sadar upazila around 10:00am.In Gopalganj, a woman, Begum, 40, was killed as a passenger bus ran over her in Tungipara Upazila of the district around 7:00am.In Chapainawabganj, two persons, including head master of a primary school, were killed in different road accidents in Gomastapur Upazila of the district around 2:30pm.In Sherpur, one Quashem Mia, 40, was killed and four others were injured when a bus knocked a human hauler at Ahmednagar area under Jhenaigati Upazila of the district around 12:30pm.In Thakurgaon, one Monir Uddin, 60, was killed on Pirganj-Ranisankail road at Gonirhat area of Pirganj Upzaila when a motorcycle knocked him when he was crossing the road around 7:00pm.In Sylhet, a 5-year-old boy was killed when a bus hit him at Kaliganj Bazar of Biswanath upazila under the district around 2:00pm. The deceased was identified as Monirul Islam, son of Kashem Mia.”As almost all drivers drive their buses, coaches and other vehicles recklessly a significant number of people are being killed every day in road accidents both in the cities and others dostricts,” Mallick Faqrul Islam, Deputy Inspector General of Highway Police told The New Nation on Thursday.He said they have filed over 700 cases against the drivers and transport owners due to reckless driving and plying of unfit vehicles since July 19 to till July 22.”Of them 400 cases have been filed against the drivers as they violated traffic rules and drove their vehicles recklessly,” Mallick Faqrul said.
