317 poor slum women get cheques for Tk 15.85 lakh

Dhaka City Corporation (South) has distributed cheques for Taka 15.85 lakh among 317 ultra-poor women living in slum areas on Monday to help them run small trades for improving their livelihood.
Of the total amount, each of the recipients was provided Taka 5,000 aimed at improving their livelihood. The amount was distributed under the ongoing “Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) Project” being implemented by Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) in different slums under DCC (south) and 23 towns other across the country.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of DCC (south) and Chairman of Town Project Board of UPPR Md Ansar Ali Khan distributed the cheques among the recipients as the chief guest at the Nagarbhaban auditorium here.
Among others, Social Welfare officer of DCC (South) Md Millatul Islam and other officers of DCC were present with Member-Secretary of the Town Project Board Md Mafijul Islam in the chair.
The government of Bangladesh, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Department for International Development (DFID) of the UK have been financing the project launched in 2008 aimed at reducing poverty of the poor women and children living in slum areas in 23 towns in the country and under DCC (south) area.
Apart from reducing poverty of the ultra poor people, different programmes are being carried out under the project for addressing different issues relating to nutrition, housing and socio-economic development of the poor people.
