31 foreign nationals held in city

The Detective Branch (DB) of police in a drive arrested 31 foreigners from the city’s Uttara, Gulshan and Banashree areas on Thursday night on charge of illegal staying.
Among them, 12 are from Nigeria, five from Uganda, four from Cameroon, three from Gambia, two from Ivory Coast, one each from Senegal, Kenya, Togo, Mali and Mozambique.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (DB) Krishna Pado Roy disclosed the matter in a press briefing in the
Media Centre of DB on Minto Road on Friday.
He said that a team of DB police picked up them the city’s at least 147 residences for staying illegally in the country.
He said that the arrested foreigners have been living in the country even after the expiry of valid date for several years.  
They are going to launch a crackdown on foreigners staying illegally in Bangladesh following reports of involvement of some of them in criminal activities. The move comes after two weeks of the murder of O-level student Zubair Ahmed in capital’s Uttara by an Algerian national, the DM official said.
Around one lakh foreigners, mostly from Africa and South East Asia have been living in the country illegally for years. Of them, some African and Thai nationals are involved with crimes, according to sources in intelligence agencies, sources said.
