30MW electricity to be purchased from India’s open market

The government of Bangladesh has agreed to the Indian proposal of buying 30mw to 35mw of electricity from open market as India is at present suppling less than 500 mw despite agreed deal for it.
Power Division has given its consent to a Power Development Board (PDB)’s proposal to import 30MW-35MW of electricity from India.
The power division in principal took the decision on Sunday and sent a letter to the PDB in this regard, an official said.
India is now supplying 470MW of electricity instead of agreed 500MW to Bangladesh due to shortage of electricity at Farakka-Baharampur transmission point.
Through an official letter, the PDB Secretary Md Zahirul Huque recently sought the policy level support from Power Division.
The letter said, the PDB would be able to import 500MW of electricity from December 2014 if it gets government approval.
The country is not getting 500MW of electricity in full capacity due to transmission overload at Farakka-Baharampur transmission line the letter said.
According to the Power Trade Company of India Ltd, the cost of per unit of electricity would be 4.46 Indian rupee.
In October 5, 2013, Bangladesh and India signed power deal to overcome power crisis in Bangladesh.
