The International Labour Organisation (ILO) on Tuesday said it will disburse a provisional compensation of Tk 50,000 to each of 3,000 victims of the Rana Plaza tragedy that have been listed by them.
Labour Minister Mojibul Hoque Chunnu officially inaugurated the provisional compensation package by handing over the pledged money to two victim families at a programme held at the Labour Ministry seminar room at the Secretariat.
The 3,000 victim families so far listed by the ILO will receive the provisional compensation through mobile money transfer services by today.
The provisional disbursement will be provided under a trust fund that has been jointly initiated by the ILO, government, local owners and international buyers to compensate the victims of the building collapse.
So far, about $ 40 million has been pledged by the stakeholders to the trust fund, but only $ 15 million has been deposited to it.
In response to an inquiry by reporters about the rest of the compensation process, the State Minister for Labour noted that it is an ongoing process and different agencies have so far been contributing to the process separately.
So far, an amount of Tk 22 crore has been disbursed from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
The compensations already provided under the PM’s relief fund include Tk 3.9 crore to 36 severely injured workers in total.
Besides, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) have disbursed about Tk 14 crore as provisional compensations to the victim families, he said.
Among the joint-disbursement of money by BGMEA and BKMEA, some victim families received about Tk 47,000 each through mobile money transfer services, according to officials.
The current compensation package of Tk 50,000 to each of the 3,000 families listed by the ILO is also a provisional compensation, they added.
The ILO has been working as the lead agency to disburse the money from the $ 40 million trust fund that has been initiated by the buyers, government, ILO, owners and other stakeholders, and the total compensation to each of the victim families will stand much higher, they added.
ILO deputy director general of field operation Gilbort Fussoun Houngbo, Labour Secretary Mikail Shiper and ILO country director Srinivasa B Reddy were also present at the programme.
