3000 new judges needed to deal with 28 lakh cases!

UNB, Dhaka :At least 3000 more judges will have to be appointed on emergency basis to reduce the huge backlog of some 28lakh cases in the country’s lower courts.At present, there are only 1700 judges including magistrates to deal with some 28 lakh cases pending with the lower courts, according to a report placed at the 14th meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry on Tuesday.”The report suggested that it’s essential to appoint at least 3000 more judges, if we want to reduce the backlog of cases,” said a press release from Parliament Secretariat.Besides, the report recommended formation of a monitoring cell, headed by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, for speedy disposal of a further 3.25 lakh cases pending with the High Court.A total of three reports —two of the Law Commission and one of the parliamentary committee-were placed and discussed at the meeting, held with its chairman Suranjit Sengupta in the chair at Jatiya Sangsad.The parliamentary watchdog suggested the government to take necessary measures for quick disposal of the cases pending the lower court and the higher court.It also discussed unusual delay in proceedings of the August 21 grenade attack case and suggested quick disposal of the case.The parliamentary committee also suggested expanding activities of the Judicial Administration Training Institute to every divisional city of the country.
