A portion, about 300 meters in length, of the under construction ‘durable’ flood protection embankment under Polder No 35/1 of the Water Development Board with the financial support of the World Bank at Bogi area within Southkhali Union under Sharankhola Upazila in Bagerhat district was collapsed in the mighty river Baleswar on Saturday morning .
Not only that but also crack appeared on about 5 hundred meters of the embankment. It is apprehended that it may be collapsed at any time.
As a result, a great panic was created among the people of 4 villages within Southkhali Union Parishad. A Chinese construction farm named Coastal Hennan Water Improvement (CHWI) is constructing this durable embankment.
When a number of newsmen went to the spot (about 15 kilometers away from Sharankhola Upazila headquarters) on Saturday afternoon to see the position, found big pieces of mud are being eroded in the mighty river Baleswar. At that time some local people like freedom Fighter Rustam Ali (60), Shahjahan Hawladar (55), Tasen Hawladar (75), Abu Taleb (45), Ibrahim Haowladar (48) and some others told, the collapse of the embankment started on the day at 5 am. As a result of the collapse of the embankment several thousand houses, fish farms, ponds, Irri paddy fields of several hundred acres of lands of Bogi, Chalitabunia, Khuriakhali and Dakkhin Southkhali villages may be affected. They added, with the construction of the durable embankment the people of these areas breathed a shy of relief. But due to slow and low quality of construction work of the embankment their all hopes were belied. Moreover, without regulating the movement of the river construction of embankment is a wrong theory. As a result, on the one hand durable embankment is being constructed. But on the other hand, the constructed embankment is being eroded by the mighty river Baleswar.
Shyamal Dutta, Supervising Engineer told, the affected embankment was already visited and the contractor farm was directed to construct ring embankments on the affected area.
The engineer added, in order to curb the course of the river a proposal was sent to the World Bank.
