About 300 students were admitted to Dhaka University in last two years with the blessings of the question paper leaking syndicate members.
Each of the students paid at least Tk four lakh to the syndicate for getting the leaked question papers which helped them to get admitted to the university, Criminal Investigation Department and Dhaka University sources said.
Not only that, the syndicate supplied question papers of different public universities admission test and even bankers’ recruitment examination in exchange of huge amount of money with the applicants.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday arrested two masterminds and seven students of Dhaka University for their alleged involvement in leaking admission test question papers.
The accused were identified as the ring leaders-Enamul Haque Akash and Navid Anzum Tonoy, DU first year students Tanvir Ahmed Mollik, Md Bayezid, Nahid Iftekhar, Fardin Ahmed Sabbir, Proshenjit Das, Rifat Hossain and Azizul Hakim.
The ‘ringleaders’ of the fraud ring, Enamul Haque Akash and Navid Anzum Tonoy, had been in custody from before.
CID Additional Superintendent of Police Minhazul Islam disclosed it in a press conference on Tuesday.
“Through question paper leaks, fraud and the use of electronic devices, the group managed to pass the admission exams,” he said.
“Navid Anzum Tonoy is a student of Geography Department at the Dhaka University. Akash only studied up to ninth grade. Tonoy’s job was to gather clients from among the applicants.”
“First we arrested three principal members of the ring. Later, we arrested two more. Akash was detained from Gazipur and Tonoy from Rangpur based on intelligence.”
A total of 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with Dhaka University admission exam question paper leaks and fraud, Minhazul Islam said. “Seven are directly involved with the fraud. The seven we arrested on Tuesday used these services to secure admission. They are being questioned in the DB offices.”
In the past few years such fraud rings used small devices, looking like credit cards, that hold mobile SIMs and small listening kits that can be placed inside an examinee’s ears.
The devices allow examinees to receive information from outside the exam hall. Several examinees using such devices were caught during this year’s Dhaka University admission test and brought before the administration by police.
Minhazul Islam also told The New Nation on Tuesday evening that they arrested seven students out of at least one hundred. “It is very difficult to say how many students were admitted illegally. But we assume that the number will be at least one hundred and more. We are working to nab the illegal students,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Akhtaruzzaman told The New Nation on Tuesday that the university authorities were concerned about the question forgery syndicate.
“Every student who got admitted in the university illegally will be suspended,” he said.
He also admitted that a good number of students were admitted in the university. “The illegal students admitted in previous years. We have no record of illegal students this year as we were aware about the forgery syndicate,” the VC said.
“We have been cooperating with the law enforcers’ agencies to identify and detain the syndicate members. We will continue it until the forgery stops,” he said.
