A total of 300 fishermen have been sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in six districts of Barisal division in the last ten days (Oct 1 to Oct 10) for violating the ongoing 22-day ban against hilsa netting, according to the fisheries department said.
The 22-day ban on catching and selling hilsa for safe spawning of the fish started on October 1.
The department of fisheries with the help of the Upazila administration, police, coastguard conducted drives in the Kalabadar, Kirtankhola , Arial Kha, Meghna,Ilisha, Bishkhali, Tetulia, Sandhya, Sugandha rivers and estuaries said Azizul Haque, senior assistant director of divisional fishery department. Fisheries department will continue drives to protect hilsa resources, said Bimal Chandra Das, district fishery (hilsa) officer, Barisal.
The department operating around 924 drives conducting 447 mobile courts, seized 4, 054 kg of hilsa, fined fishermen Tk 6, 12,500 and destroyed 19.61 lakh metres of nets within the last ten days in the division.
Total 289 cases also lodged and some fishing trawlers and boats were seized.
Case lodged against seventy people for attacking vigilance team
Case lodged on Wednesday against seventy people for attacking vigilance team of anti-fishing drive on Joyonti River in Muladi Tuesday.
Apu Saha, Muladi upazila fishery officer, acknowledged the fact, the case was lodged for creating obstacle against performing public duty.
Matiur Rahman, officer in charge of Muladi police station, said Apu Saha, Muladi upazila fishery officer, as complainant lodged the case against 12 accused by name and other 60 unnamed accused on Wednesday afternoon. The OC of the police station, said names of local influential Salam Munshi, his sons Rajib Munshi, Zahir Munshi were included among the by-name accused and police operating drives to arrest the accused.
Mentionable a vigilance team of fishery department and law enforcing agencies on duty to prevent fishing on open water resources came under attack when they chased some fishermen engaged in fishing hilsa on Tuesday noon.
The vigilance team forced to back leaving the drive after some of their members became injured by brickbats thrown on them by the accused.
Jakir Hossain, upazila nirbahi officer of Muladi, also acknowledging the incident on Tuesday night said only one person person was injured in the attack.
