About 300 colleges under Dhaka Board are in existence crisis as a few number of students have applied for admission in these colleges in higher secondary courses this year, board sources said.
The Education Ministry has launched online admission process in higher secondary courses for the first time this year. A student could apply in five colleges for admission.
Meanwhile, the time for submission of application for the admission has already ended on Sunday.
Sources said, the total admission process is being handled by the Dhaka Education Board. The board found that most of the students have applied in reputed and standard colleges. According to the admission policy, a college has to have at least 25 students in a group. As a result, about 300 colleges would not be able to fulfil their seats for higher secondary education.
The Dhaka Education Board is in an embarrassing situation because it gave permission to run the activities of these colleges. Most of them have no capability to mobilize educational activities properly. But they got the permission through interference of the influential quarters.
Dhaka Education Board Chairman Professor Md Abu Bakkar Siddique said, the colleges have to work hard to attract the students for admission. Otherwise, it will be difficult for their existence. If they fail to do it the permission might be cancelled, he said.
“The students have chosen colleges as per their own wish. The colleges which are in existence crisis should work to reach the students,” Professor Siddique said.
Inspector of colleges, Dhaka Education Board Dr Md Ashfakush Salehin said that the colleges should take initiative for their existence. The college authorities have to make their colleges as standard and ensure education friendly environment, he said.
He also admitted that it would not be wise to permit any college to establish here and there.
A total of 372,834 students applied for admission in higher secondary courses. But, there are 460,000 seats in 1,205 colleges under Dhaka Education Board. 87,166 seats will remain empty. The situation was created because the students are not interested to take admission in these colleges.
Wishing anonymity, an official of Dhaka Education Board told The New Nation that there are three systems to give permission to a college. The college is affiliated to school, only college and the college that promises that it will never apply for Monthly Pay Order (MPO). The board is responsible for the last one.
