300 bighas brought under mung bean farming in Gaibandha

About 300 bighas owned by an equal number of farmers have been brought under BARI mung bean-6 farming during the current season in the district.
The variety has been farmed at farmers’ level under direct supervision of RDRS Bangladesh, a nongovernment organization, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agriculture University (BSMRAU) under the project of Crops Intensification in Northern Region of Bangladesh.
Krishi Gobeshana Foundation (KGF) and Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) are also providing their assistance to the growers here to make the mung bean farming a success.
Agri experts sources said the objective of the mung bean farming is to help the farmers accustom to the pattern of four-crop annually to ensure food security and change their lots economically.
Besides, to create working opportunities among the poor particularly the farm day labors round the year including the lean period of Ashwin and Kartik was another objective of the four-crop pattern, they also said.
The farmers are expecting a desired output of the crop as the variety has grown well on the land this season.
On Thursday, a farmers’ field day on the display of the mung bean plot was held at Nayabandar village under Padumshahar union of Shagahta upazila.
Deputy director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin attended the function as the chief guest and professor of BSMRAU Dr. Moynul Haque and district training officer of DAE Aminul Islam were present as the special guests.
The function was also attended, among others, by upazila parishad Vice Chairman Momitul Haque Nayan, upazila agriculture officer AKM Mobinuzzaman Chowdhury, research associate of KGF Mamunar Rashid, agriculture officer of RDRS Bangladesh Shorifa Pasha and farmer Nasim Uddin.
After visiting the plot of one farmer Nasim Uddin, the officials and farmers expressed their satisfaction over the scenario of the crop field.
