The government will buy 30 luxury cars for providing protocol and transport facilities to the VVIP guests who will be attending the OIC’s 45th foreign ministers conference in Dhaka.
The conference will be held from May 5-6 next year.
The luxurious European model Mercedes Benz S Class/BMW-7 Sedan series cars would be brought under the duty free import facilities.
A proposal in this regard will be placed before the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs tomorrow.
The Ministry of Public Administration forwarded the proposal to the Cabinet Committee citing that 30 luxury cars (Mercedes Benz S Class/BMW-7) should be imported to provide protocol and transport facilities to the VVIPs who will attend the OIC foreign ministers summit in Dhaka next year.
“The Prime Minister’s Office has already agreed to import the cars principal and now it needs the nod of Cabinet Committee on
Economic Affairs,” said the proposal signed by Senior Secretary of The Ministry of Public Administration Dr Mozammel Haque Khan.
The Public Administration Ministry took the decision as per the Foreign Ministry’s request in this regard. The Foreign Ministry sent a summary to the Ministry on October 30 this year.
“In order to uphold the image of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the global arena and considering the importance and dignity of the conference, 30 Mercedes-Benz (S Class) or BMW-7 series cars should be brought for use in the conference. These cars should be collected in direct purchasing mode due to time constraint,” read the Foreign Ministry’s summary.
A Public Administration Ministry official quoting a government decision told The New Nation that after completion of the conference these vehicles will be handed over to the foreign ministry and to the government transport pool for the use of invited VVIP guests at different international conferences in the future. Since the vehicles are to be used in state protocols and governmental requirements, they should be allowed to import free of duty as special consideration.
