Law enforcers have arrested around 410,864 people in the last three years and filed over 150,000 cases in different police stations, intelligence sources said.
Around 30 lakh Yaba pills entered the country through at least 33 points on the Myanmar border, they said, adding over 70 lakh drug addicts spend at least Tk 50 crore everyday on drug use.
The consumption of this band drug has been seen from poor to rich families because of its available supply in the city and other parts of the country.
Meanwhile, it has sent a wave of shock and fear among the people following its rapid spread, particularly among the teens and youngsters.
According to a data the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), the law enforcers have seized 56,22,206 pieces of Yaba in last six months
this year and 75,19,450 in last year while the number was 49,68,359 in 2014. It also stated the recovery of 28,21,528 Yaba pills in 2013, 19,51,392 in 2012, 13,60,186 in 2011, 812,716 in 2010, 129,644 in 2009 and 36,543 in 2008.
In the latest drive, police seized a micro-bus along with two lakh Yaba tablets from the city’s Khilkhet area on Friday night. They also arrested 26 people on the charge of Yaba smuggling.
Earlier on July 20, members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (East Zone) in two drives seized a total of 10 lakh Yaba tablets worth over Tk 50 crore in Anwara Upazila of Chittagong.
On January 7, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) seized 10 lakh yaba tablets worth Tk 40 crore while those were being smuggled into the country by a trawler through the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port.
The elite force also seized 28 lakh Yaba tablets in Dhaka and Chittagong on January 19.
Members of Bangladesh Navy seized the “biggest ever” consignment of Yaba tablets at the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port on February 5, 2015. They seized 15 lakh pieces of Yaba worth Tk 82.50 crore from a fishing trawler.
Abuse of this drug has gone up in the country significantly over the recent years, Director General (DG) of Department of Narcotics Control Dr Khandakar Rakibur Rahman told The New Nation on Saturday.
“The consignments of the tablets entering the country are much higher than the amount recovered by the law enforcement agencies. We’ve stepped up our vigilance in and around the capital to curb trading of this deadly drug,” the DG said.
When asked, Director of DNC (Operation and Intelligence) Toufiq Uddin Ahmed said, we are working with zero tolerance against Yaba and conducting operation immediately after getting any information in this regard.
Assistant Director of RAB Legal and Media Wing Mizanur Rahman said we are conducting operation regularly to nab the Yaba traders.
Talking to The New Nation, an ASP of Crime Prevention Company of RAB-7 unit, not to be named, said they have information that some of the traders manufacture the tablet in the remote areas of Cox’s Bazar district and some other hilly areas.
“We’ll soon launch a drive to catch the culprits,” he said, adding that there are two categories of the stimulating tablets R-7 and WY (locally known as Champa), which are in high demand locally.
He said R-7 is expensive as a piece of this drug costs in between Tk 700 and Tk 800 while each WY tablet can be purchased for around Tk 300.
