SUPRA, a developmental organization working for good governance in the country, claimed that around 30 lakh people are victims of diarrhoea annually from consuming adulterated and unhealthy foods. SUPRA revealed this while staging a human chain in front of the National Press Club marking the World Health Day, 2015.
SUPRA sources further said that the human chain was also formed in 45 other districts as a mark of protest against food adulteration in Bangladesh. The aim was to ensure safe food for common people. Among the speakers, there were Co-ordinator of SUPRA, Md. Shariful Islam, Supporting Co-ordinator of SUPRA, Enamul Haque Imran, and executives Sakera Nahar, Dil Afroz Duti and Md. Moazzem Hossain.
The speakers in the human chain said, ‘Laws like the Formalin Act 2015 give people hope that food adulteration in the country will come to a stand still. We have to execute these laws to get positive results, and not keep them in the law books as reference only.’
The speakers also demanded that the government would realize the dream of community clinics what they promised to the nation and that the law enforcing bodies should be more vigilant about checking food adulteration. Formalin Act 2015 and Safe Food Act 2013 have to be realized. More fund has to be put in budget for health sector.
Specialist physicians have to be set up at local levels and the syllabus of children in schools must include topics on food safety and nutrition, they said.
