A 30-kilometer long tailback has been remaining at several points on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway from Elenga to Karotia bypass of Tangail district since Friday midnight due to the dilapidated conditions of the highway.
As a result, thousands of vehicles are moving slowly and the passengers faced untold sufferings.
Tariqul Islam, a Sub-Inspector at Elenga Highway Police Station, said, a huge numbers of potholes have been created for drizzling and construction work of converting the highway into a four-lane one.
Early in the morning on Saturday, a Dhaka-bound loaded truck suddenly went out of order on the highway at Pouli under Kalihati and it contributed much to create the tailback.
Consequently for slow vehicular movement, hundreds of vehicles remained stuck on the highway around a 30 kilometer stretch from Elenga to Karotia in Tangail, causing sufferings to passengers amid cold weather.
Junayed Ahmed, a passenger, who on the way to Dhaka from Tangail, told The New Nation that his bus started from Tangail bus stand at 10am. But the bus did not cross the district area till 4pm. “The tailback is regular phenomenon now. It brings unbearable sufferings,” he said.
