Over 100 injured across country: 30 killed in road mishaps

Staff Reporter :At least 30 people were killed and over 100 injured in separate road accidents across the country in the last three days. Of them, 17 people were killed on Sunday in Sirajganj sadr upazila. Five others were killed on Friday at Kamarkhand upazila of the same district. Besides, three people were killed in Comilla, three in Rangpur and Munshiganj on Friday and Saturday. A teenage boy was also killed in city’s Hatirjheel area on Saturday, according to agency and our correspondents. In Sirajganj, the fatal road accident occurred at Mulibari level-crossing on the western side of Bangabandhu Bridge approach road.Five of the deceased were identified as Minhaz Prodhan, diver of Azad Paribahan, Liton Ahmed, Sabuj of Gaibandha, Tahera Begum of Badarganj in Rangpur district and Zillur Rahman of Bogra district.Officer-in charge of Bangabandhu Bridge west side police station Helal Uddin said the accident took place when a Bogra-bound bus of ‘Sabbir Paribahan’ from Chittagong collided with a Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Azad Paribahan’ from Sayedpur at the level-crossing around 5am, leaving 12 people dead on the spot and 67 others injured.Four of the injured victims were declared dead after they were taken to sadar hospital. Of the injured, 10 were shifted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital as their conditions deteriorated. Another victim died there after admission.In another road crash in Sirajganj, five people, including women and children, were killed and 20 injured when a Gaibandha-bound bus fell into a ditch in Kashem Square area on the western side of the Bangabandhu Bridge link road in Kamarkhand upazila on Friday. Four of the five deceased were identified as Shahana, 12, daughter of Zahidul Islam from Sonaidanga village in Gaibandha Sadar upazila, Farida, 22, wife of Rafiqul Islam from the same village, Selina, 28, wife of Erfan Ali from Birahipur village in Gobindaganj upazila, Nirob, a minor boy of Jewel Ahmed from Gariapara village of the same upazila.BM Emdadul Haque, Officer in-Charge of Hatikumarul Highway Police Station, said the Gaibandha-bound bus carrying home-goers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr tumbled into the ditch breaking the railing of bridge No 4 of the Bangabandhu Bridge link road around 5 pm, leaving five of the passengers dead on the spot and 20 others injured.In Comilla on Saturday, three people including a man and his son were killed and 16 others injured in separate road accidents in Burichang and Chandina upazilas on Saturday.In Burichang, a man and his son were crushed under the wheels of a speeding bus at Debpur on the Comilla-Burichang Regional highway at Debpur on Sunday.The deceased were identified as Azharul Islam, 42, and his son Nur Morshed, 9, hailing from Rampur village in the upazila. Sub-inspector of Mainamati Highway Police Camp Amar Chandra confirmed the incident saying a Comilla-bound bus hit the due on the regional highway around 9 am, leaving them dead on the spot.In Chandina, a woman was killed and 16 others were injured as a bus turned turtle on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Kutumbopur on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Hasu Begum, 50. She used to beg in the upazila for her living. Monirul Islam, Sub-Inspector of Eliotganj Highway Police Camp, said that a Dhaka-bound bus of Hanif Paribahan from Chittagong turned turtle after its driver lost control over the steering at around 7am, leaving Hasu Begum dead on the spot and 16 others injured.Three people were killed and at least 53 others injured in two road accidents in Rangpur and Munshiganj on Friday.In Rangpur, a man was killed and at least 50 others were injured as a bus overturned in Mithapukur upazila around 4:30am, leaving its passenger Liton, 25, from Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat district, on the spot.Police said at least 50 people were injured in the incident. They were whisked off to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).In Munshiganj, two people were killed on the spot and three others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Dogachi in Louhojong upazila around 8am, police said.One of the deceased was identified as Iman Ali, 30, of Rangpur district.In capital Dhaka, a teenage boy was killed and seven others were injured, three of them critically, as a pickup van overturned in Hatirjheel area here on Sunday.The accident occurred around 12.30pm when the pickup van carrying 20 people, mostly youngsters, turned turtle near Hatirjheel, Sub Inspector Mosharraf Hossain of Shilpanchal Police Station. Eight people were also injured in the accident, he said, adding that they were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where one Sumon, 15, succumbed to his injuries around 7.30 in the evening.The condition of three others is stated to be critical. Sumon, son of a vegetable trader Shafiqul Islam, hailed from Sadullapur in Gaibandha district and he used to live at Madhubagh in the capital city.
