Municipality polls campagning: 30 injured as AL rivals clash

At least 20 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of the Awami League mayoral candidate and the party’s rebel candidate in Chauddagram of Comilla district on Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, 10 people were
injured in a clash between two factions of local unit Awami League in front of Palang Model police station in Shariatpur on Monday.
They were sent to different medical centers of Comilla and the capital city for treatment.
Seven motorbikes and 20 shops were also vandalized and a microbus was torched during the incident, reports our Comilla correspondent.
Vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway stopped for nearly two and half an hours during the clash that ensued around 4:00pm.
Locals and eyewitnesses said that the clash occurred between Mizanur Rahman, AL candidate, and Imam Hossain Patwari, rival candidate.
Mizanur’s supporters was campaigning and marching to their party’s election office in the town when his competitor’s men chanted slogans against him, leading to the clash, locals said.
The supporters threw cocktail bombs and fired shots during the chase and counter-chase that left two people bullet wounded.
The shooting left Bangladesh Chhatra League activist Khaled Hossain, 22, and a minor boy Abdul Hannan, 12, bullet-hit.
On information, additional police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members from Comilla reached the spot and brought the situation under their control.
When contacted, both the candidates blamed each other for the clash. Earlier on December 11, four people were injured in a clash between the same groups.
In Shariatpur witnesses said that district Awami League arranged a party meeting ahead of upcoming municipality polls around 12:00pm. After the meeting, a rally was formed led by Awami League central leader Iqbal Hossain Opu and district Chhatra League leader Nurul Amin.
Meanwhile, supporters of another leader Bacchu Bepary attacked the supports of Nurul Amin which triggered a clash, leaving 10 injured. Later, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Awami League leader Nurul Amin said that outsiders attacked the rally.
Confirming the matter, Khalilur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Palang Model police station said that additional police forces were deployed in the area.
