Thirty people, including 11 policemen, were injured in a clash over taking possession of a water body ‘forcibly’ at Thubri Shilchand in Gowainghat upazila of the district on Thursday.
Police arrested five Person including three women in this connation.
Sources said, a group of local influential people, led by one Abdul Monaf, had long been trying to take the possession of the government-owned water body, which is now in use of Manaura Probhati Motshajibi Samabay Samiti Ltd on lease. Following the application of the lease holder . police, on instruction of Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Salah Uddin, conducted a drive in the area at 12.00pm to hunt down the alleged grabbers.
At one stage, the grabbers’ men equipped with lethal weapons attacked the law enforcers, leaving 11 policemen injured. They include Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Gowainghat police station.
Police lobbed 14 teargas shells and fired 222 bullets to bring the situation under control, leaving at least 20 attackers injured. Injured OC Delowar Hossain said a case was filed in this connection.
