3 yaba smugglers hurt in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Three yaba smugglers were injured in a ‘gunfight’ with Detective Branch (DB) of police in Darianagar area here early Thursday.
The injured were identified as Ekram,25, son of Haji Fazal, Hasmat Ullah,35, son of Ali Akbar, both residents of Moulvipara village, and Faruk,30, son of Nur Mohammad, a resident of Islamabad village in Teknaf.
Manzur Alam, officer-in-charge of Cox’s Bazar DB police, said they arrested the trio, wanted accused in drugs smuggling case, from Teknaf on their way to Cox’s Bazar at about 8:00pm on Wednesday.
Later, police along with the arrestees launched a drive in Darianagar area to recover Yaba tablets at about 2:30am.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, their cohorts, however, opened fire on police, prompting them to fire back that triggered a gunfight.
Several gunshots were exchanged between the two sides when the three Yaba smugglers were injured.
Police seized a jeep, 3,000 pieces of Yaba tablet, two light guns, two rounds of cartridge and two rounds of bullet from the scene.
Injured Ekram was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital while Hasmat and Faruk to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Ekram was wanted in several cases, including for Yaba smuggling, police said.
