3 traffickers killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’ with cops

Cox’s Bazar Correspondent :Three alleged human traffickers were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district early Friday.The victims were identified as Dulu Hossain, 45, from Shahporirdwip Bazarpara area, Jahangir Alam, 40, Katabania village and Jafar Alam, 35, from Hariarkhal area of the Upazila.Three policemen, including Ataur Rahman Khandakar, Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Police Station were also injured in the gunfight, said our local correspondent quoting the police.Teknaf OC Khandakar Ataur Rahman said, “Acting on a tip-off, we raided Saikot Hatchery Zone when a gang of human traffickers were attempting to traffic some people to Malaysia through the channel around 4:30am. “Sensing our presence, the human traffickers opened fire at the police.”In self-defence, police fired back that left three bullet injured and them were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared them dead, the police official said.The OC said, “They are enlisted as human traffickers by the Home Ministry and accused in various trafficking cases under Teknaf Thana. Of them, Dulu is facing nine cases, Jahangir faces eight and Zafar two, he said.Police also recovered country-made four pistols and 10 rounds of cartridges from the spot, he said.The bodies had been sent to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the police official said.
