Sylhet Bureau :
As a part of government’s priority programme, Golapgonj Upazila in Sylhet has been brought under 100% electrification.
Deputy General Manager (DGM) Rural Electrification Board (REB) of Golapgonj Mamun-ur Rashid informed this while talking to this correspondent.
He said, ‘During last 10 years, 3 new sub-stations and 656 kilometres electricity transmission lines have been established. With this the whole upazila has come under power supply. Newly- built Naliuri Sub-station which has been built at the cost of Tk 8 crore awaits inauguration.
In Golapgonj Upazila of Sylhet District, Kalikrishnapur village under Sharifpur Union, Aklaspur village under Bagha Union, are two remotest areas where supplying power is a challenge. But due to the initiative of Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, electricity reached there. According to REB authority it is a milestone.
According to Golapgonj Rural Electrification Board (REB) office, in 2008 its subscribers were 30,212 and at present the number is 58,931. After 10 years the number of consumers has stood 28,719. At the same time, the demand of electricity is increasing from 8 M.W to 19 M.W. During the last 10 years, new 653 kilometres transmission lines were established. In 2008 there were only 705 kilometres but now the length of transmission lines is 1358 kilometres.
According to the information given by the REB authority, since 1972 to 2008, the expenditure for electricity was Tk 105 Cr, where as in the last 10 years it was about Tk 100 Crore. Upto 2008 there was only one substation. Now new 3 sub-stations have been built and another one in Bagha Union of the upazila has been under Construction. Rural Electrification Board (REB) officials informed, present government has given emphasis on 100% electrification. Once revenue law was applicable.’So the area where revenue income is not profitable, the line was not established. Where it is profitable, more line is be set up’- this policy was adopted in 2010. The government abandoned this policy and ‘Where there are consumers there is electricity’ is followed by the government.
Upazila Awami League leader Shahabuddin Ahmed said, ‘We are grateful to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid. Not only the light of education has been spread but also our villages are blessed with power supply. Statistics shows during the last 10 years, development work in electrification is tremendous’.
Mamunur Rashid, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Golapgonj said, the present government has taken up 10 special initiative. One of them is supply of electricity to all. Those who have not applied will receive connection quickly if they apply. The administration will extend full co-operation to them’.
