Three heads of state from South Asia are arriving in Dhaka this March to attend the 50th anniversary of Independence and the birth centenary celebrations of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The three heads of state are – Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They can visit Dhaka from March 17 to 26.
Foreign Ministry Secretary (Asia) Ambassador Mashfi bint Shams confirmed the information.
According to foreign ministry sources, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Dhaka on March 26 and 27 and will attend the Independence Day celebrations. The Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Nepal’s President Bidya Devi Bhandari are scheduled to visit Dhaka before March 26. The three heads of state of South Asia will hold a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during their visit to Dhaka.
According to diplomatic sources, the heads of state of Turkey and Hungary were also scheduled to visit Dhaka during this period. However, there has been uncertainty about their visit due to the Covid-19 situation.
Meanwhile, diplomatic sources in South Asia say that India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankaris will visit Dhaka on March 4 to finalize the issue of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka.
During this, the Indian Foreign Minister will have a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen. The meeting will review all issues of the two countries. Besides, the meeting will also finalize in which sectors further progress will be made between the two countries during Narendra Modi’s visit to Dhaka.
Diplomats in Dhaka want to conclude memoranda or agreements on at least six issues during the Indian chief’s visit to Dhaka – disaster management and water development in the Kushiyara River will be given more importance. Besides, trade, land transport between Bangladesh-India-Nepal, energy, border management, sea resources will also be given the upper hand.
On the other hand, it is learned that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) could be signed between the two countries on cooperation in the fisheries sector during the visit of the President of Maldives.
