UNB, Cox’s Bazar :
Three Rohingya youths were killed in an alleged gunfight with police in connection with the kidnap of a minor girl in Teknaf upazila on early Friday.
Police identified them as Ukhiya Rohingya camp residents Shamsul Alam, 35, and Nur Alam, 21, and Leda Camp resident Habib, 20.
Pradip Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Police Station, said a three-year-old girl was abducted several days ago. The kidnappers had also demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom.
Police launched drives to rescue the girl after her family approached for help. The kidnappers released the girl on June 2, the OC said.
The Rohingya men were arrested at 11:30pm on Thursday for their suspected involvement in the kidnapping, Pradip said.
After interrogation, police took the suspects with them to an area behind the Leda Camp in Teknaf around 1:45am to recover firearms.
A number of criminals, who were staying there, opened fire as soon as police reached the spot and triggered a skirmish, the OC said.
The men were killed in the ‘gunfight’, the police officer claimed, adding that they also recovered three light guns and eight cartridges.
