A tribunal here on Sunday sentenced four people, including three engineers of Bangladesh Railway, to 10 years imprisonment each in a case filed over the death of minor boy Jihad in the city in 2014.
The convicts-Shafiqul Islam alias Abdus Salam, contractor of M/S SR House, Md Jahangir Alam, senior sub assistant engineer (inspector of tube-well division) of Bangladesh Railway (BR), its assistant engineers Md Nasir Uddin and Zafar Ahmed Shakir-were also fined Tk 2 lakh each, in default, to suffer two years more imprisonment. The tribunal also acquitted two accused-assistant engineers (inspector of tube-well division) of Bangladesh Railway (BR) Dipak Kumar Bhowmik and Md Saiful Islam-from the charges as no specific charge was brought against them. Judge M Akhtaruzzaman of the Dhaka Special Court-5 handed down the verdict.
On February 8, the same court set on Sunday (February 26) for delivering the judgment after closing arguments from both sides. Earlier on October 4 last year, a court framed charges against six people over the death of Jihad, a four-year-old boy, who died after falling into an abandoned deep tube-well in Shahjahanpur area of city on December 26, 2014.
