3 projects costing Tk 1419cr get nod

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved three development projects with total outlay of Tk 1,419 crore including the ‘Upazila Complex Extension (1st revised)’ project at a cost of Tk 1,199 crore.
The approval came from the 19th ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year held at the NEC conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the entire cost of the three projects would come from the government exchequer. State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan and Planning Division Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam were present at the briefing.
The Planning Minister said that, under the ‘Upazila Complex Extension (1st revised)’ project, there would be extension work of some 204 upazila complex buildings out of the 453 upazilas. He also informed that the rest of the upazila complex buildings would be gradually extended with modern facilities.
Planning Ministry sources said, that under the project, each of the four-storey upazila complex building would have one-storey hall room, incorporating system for reserving rain water, solar panels, emergency exit and fire extinguishing system.
Meanwhile, the upazila complex buildings at the coastal belt would be five-storey considering the possible hit of cyclones in the coastal areas. The project, being implemented by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), is due to be completed by June 2017.
The day’s ECNEC meeting also approved the Integrated Rural Employment Assistance Project (Revised) at a cost of Tk 131 crore for the poor and distressed rural women, to be entirely borne by the government fund.
Under the project, each of some 50,000 rural women under 59 upazilas of 15 districts of Khulna and Barisal divisions would be given Tk 15,000 each as microcredit to empower the poor and distressed women socio-economically.
Besides, the ECNEC meeting gave nod to another project titled ‘Constructing connecting road from Shirnirtek to Gabtoli Bridge (revised)’ at a cost of Tk 89 crore, being implemented by the Roads and Highways Department.
The aim of constructing this connecting road is to reduce the traffic congestion creating a link between Tongi-Uttara-Ashulia Highway to Dhaka-Aricha Highway. The project is expected to be completed by June, 2015.
In reply to a query, AHM Mustafa Kamal, popularly known as Lotus Kamal, said steps are being taken to speed up the progress of project implementation.
