A case has been registered with Shampur Police Station for beating up three policemen, including a traffic sergeant, at Jurian Railgate area in the capital.
Mentioning the names of the three people arrested in the incident on Tuesday night, the injured Shampur police traffic sergeant Ali Hossain became the plaintiff and filed a case against 450 unidentified persons.
The accused in the case are Sohag-ul Islam Rony, a journalist with Barta Bichitra, his wife Yasin Jahan Nishan Bhuiyan and brother-in-law Yasir Arafat Bhuiyan.
Shampur Police Station OC Mofizul Alam confirmed the matter.
On Tuesday morning, three policemen were beaten by an angry mob in Jurain area as the trio allegedly assaulted a female pillion rider.
A video of the mob beating was posted on the social media went viral.
The injured police members are sergeant Ali Hossain of DMP Wari traffic division, constable Sirajul Islam and Shaympur police sub-inspector Utpal Dutta.
The three are undergoing treatment at the Central Police Hospital in Dhaka’s Rajarbagh, said Gobinda Chandra Pal, additional deputy commissioner, Wari traffic division.
Local residents said that the incident took place at about 9:30am near Jurain traffic police box when a person was driving the bike while his wife was a pillion rider.
The traffic policemen stopped the vehicle and wanted to check the driving licence and other documents.
An argument broke out between the rider and the policemen. The woman also joined the protest and argued with the policemen that allegedly assaulted the woman.
As she shouted for help, locals rushed there and started beating the policemen.
The video footage that went viral showed that the policemen were manhandled by the local people. It also showed a group of people attacking the police while many others chased them.
ADC Gobinda said that the motorbike was on the wrong side of the road when the traffic policemen intercepted it; the riders started arguing with the lawmen.
The woman threatened the policemen and provoked local people to attack the on-duty police personnel, added the official.
Shaympur police officer-in-charge Mofizul Alam said that they had arrested three people, including the couple, for attacking the police.
According to the motorbike driver Rony, he is a law intern and runs a local newspaper. He was injured during the incident and taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital by the police.
He told reporters at the DMCH that they were in a hurry, but stopped motorbike after the traffic police gave out a signal. ‘The policemen misbehaved with us and demanded Tk 10,000. They assaulted me as I refused to give them money,’ said Rony.
Police, however, said that they would be analyzing the footage and take legal actions against those who participated in beating the policemen.
