UNB, Tangail :
Three leaders of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) were killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Omarpur in Sadar upazila early Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Omar Ali, 34, president of the district unit of PBCP, Abul Kashem, 35, the party’s alternative ‘parliament member’, and Abdus Samad, 30, a commander of the party. Mahiuddin Faruk, commanding officer of RAB-12, said acting on secret information that a gang of outlawed party men were holding a secret meeting in the area, a team of the elite force conducted a drive there around 4:00 am.
Sensing the presence of the RAB members, the gang members opened fire at them, prompting the elite force to fire back, triggering a gunfight. At one stage, the trio were caught in the line of fire and injured while their associates managed to flee the scene. Later, they were rushed to Tangail Medical College Hospital where doctors declared them dead.
RAB members also recovered two pistols and one double-barrel gun from the spot.
