The government plans to establish three more public universities in Bogura, Chandpur and Luxmipur districts with a view to expand the higher education in the country, Education Ministry sources said.
All the three universities will be Science and Technology based universities, the ministry sources said. The proposed names of the universities are Bogura Science and Technology University, Chandpur Science and Technology University and Luxmipur Science and Technology University.
The Education Ministry officials have already prepared a draft law, which will be presented in the Cabinet meeting in a month time, the sources said.
Additional Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education Division of Education Ministry Md Abdullah Al Hasan Chowdhury said, the government approval of the planned universities is now in the final stage of processing. “It will be placed to Cabinet soon,” he said.
“The universities will help fill the gap of skilled graduates based on science and technology. Now we are hiring manpower from abroad because there are no sufficient skilled people in the country. So the ministry has given concentration to establish science and technology based universities,” he said.
Sources said, the draft laws for setting up the aforementioned universities are being studied by the ministry and would be approved by the Cabinet before these are passed in the House. At present, there are a total of 41 public universities in the country.
In January 2016, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had reiterated her commitment of making higher education affordable to ordinary people by establishing at least one university in every district under public or private initiative. The government is giving much emphasis on establishing science and technology universities to keep pace with the world in higher studies.
Many welcomed the initiative as the cost of education in public universities is considerably less than in private universities.
