3 more testify in DU student’s rape case

Three more prosecution witnesses, including a teacher of Dhaka University, yesterday testified in a tribunal in the case filed over the rape of a Dhaka University (DU) student in the capital’s Kurmitola area.
The witnesses are a teacher of the Sociology Department of the university and the victim’s two friends. Of the accused, the teacher, who is a professor of university took the victim to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment.
Judge Begum Mosammat Quamrunnahar of the Women and Children Repression Prevention-7 of Dhaka recorded the depositions of three.
Later, the defence lawyer cross-examined the witnesses on behalf of the accused.
The three witnesses narrated how they learned of the incident and later took initiative for the victim’s treatment. They also demanded exemplary punishment for the accused. Then the tribunal fixed September 24 for next hearing in the case. Earlier, the victim and her father testified in the same tribunal.
During Wednesday’s hearing also, the lone accused Majnu was produced in the tribunal.
On January 5, the DU student was raped while she was walking from Kurmitola bus stop to a friend’s house near Shewra Rail gate of the capital after getting off a university bus.
The next day, the victim’s father filed the case with Cantonment Police Station. On January 8, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Majnu,30, from Shewra area. Later, Majnu made a confessional statement on January 16.
