Two suspected drug traffickers were killed in a ‘shootout’ with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Cox’s Bazar’s Ramu, while another unidentified young man died in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The gunfight with drug smugglers took place around 9:30am on Tuesday near a RAB checkpost at Paner Chhara beside the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway, said Major Md Mehedi Hassan, a Senior Officer of RAB-7.
“A van carrying oil ignored RAB’s signal to stop. A RAB team, then, chased it, prompting gunfight,” the RAB official said.
Two of the drug traffickers were injured in the encounter while two others fled. The injured were declared dead when they were taken to Cox’s Bazar Central Hospital. But, RAB could not provide details about the identities of the dead.
Four firearms and 450,000 pieces of yaba pills were recovered.
Another person died in a ‘shootout’ with police in the city’s Khilgaon in the capital, said Khandaker Nurunnabi, Deputy Commissioner of Detective Branch (DB) of police.
DB police went near a Khilgaon market after being informed about the ‘criminals’ gathering there, he said.
“The criminals attacked the police and police retaliated. In the encounter, one person was injured and the rest of them fled.”
The injured man was declared dead when he was taken to DMCH.
