Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tajul Islam on Sunday said the rate of new dengue infections has come down due to the concerted efforts of all and growing awareness.
He said this at the Secretariat after the oath-taking ceremony of 20 newly elected members of 17 Zila Parishads.
The dengue outbreak will be checked using this year’s experiences, he said adding that all the departments concerned have been directed to prepare a master plan to control dengue in the future.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), more than 63,514 cases were recorded since January while the government confirmed 47 deaths.
At least 1,299 new dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country in 24 hours till Sunday morning, while 5,940 patients undergoing treatments, showed the DGHS daily update. A total of 169 dengue death cases have so far been reported to the DGHS. Of them, deaths of 80 patients by dengue were scrutinized by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) while the review committee of the Health Ministry confirmed the death of 47 persons, said Prof Meerjady Sabrina Flora, Director of IEDCR at a press briefing on Sunday.
She said that three more people died of dengue in Dhaka, Madarapur and Barishal districts yesterday and 1,299 were hospitalized in last 24 hours in the country.
Of the new infections, 607 were recorded in Dhaka alone with 692 in other parts of the country, according to Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General Health Services (DGHS).
It said that a total of 63,514 dengue patients were hospitalized across Bangladesh since January 1 to August 25.
Of them, 57,405 patients were released from hospitals after recovering from the disease.
Currently, 5,940 patients are being treated at different hospitals and clinics across the country.
Of them, 3,268 are taking treatment in Dhaka and 2,672 outside the capital
Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam on Sunday said that legal action would be taken against people who will not cooperate with the ongoing combating operation to destroy Aedes mosquitoes and their breeding grounds.
“We have received information that in many cases our cleaning staffs are being obstructed to enter the premises of some buildings. We will take legal action against those building owners or security guards if they do not cooperate with the drives which are going on in the 36 wards under DNCC,” he said.
Atiqul Islam said this while inaugurating awareness campaign to tackle dengue organized by Sampriti Bangladesh on Gulshan-2 DNCC Market premises.
In Dhaka, a man died from dengue at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) around 1:00am yesterday.
The deceased is identifies as Fazlur Rahman, 55, a resident of Gopalganj. He resided in the capital’s Banasree area.
Al Fayed Nobel, nephew of the deceased, said: “My uncle was admitted to DMCH on August 23, after he was diagnosed with dengue infection.
“He died in the hospital while undergoing treatment at the Medicine Department,” Fayed added.
In Madaripur, a woman died of dengue around 10pm on August 24 on her way to Dhaka from Shibchar Upazila Health Complex.
