Three more dengue patients died in Dhaka, Khulna and Mymensingh on Wednesday. With it, the death toll reached 52, says the Health Ministry, but according to the unofficial account, so far 124 died.
At the same time, in last 24 hours 1,157 new patients were admitted to the hospitals across the country.
In Dhaka, Ariful Islam, 34, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). Ariful came from Munshiganj district. He died while undergoing treatment at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday. Ariful was living in a rented house in the Muradpur High School Road area under Kadamtali police station.
Arafat Robi, a relative of Ariful, said that Ariful had been suffering from fever since Saturday. He was first treated at a local hospital in Muradpur. Dengue was later identified in blood tests. He was admitted to DMCH yesterday morning. Arif’s death certificate from DMCH stated that Arif died of dengue disease.Inspector in-charge of the DMCH police outpost Bachchu Mia said relatives of Ariful had received the bodies.
In Mymensingh, Hafizul Islam, 30, a readymade garment worker from Trishal upazila, died while being brought to Dhaka from Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) in the morning.
Dr Laxmi Narayan Majumdar, Deputy Director of MMCH, said that Hafizul was diagnosed with dengue when he was in Dhaka.
He returned home after receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
“Hafizul came to MMCH with high fever on Tuesday night,” Manumdar said.
Doctors at the emergency suggested shifting him to DMCH for better treatment. “He died around 3:00am while being brought to Dhaka,” the MMCH deputy director said.
In Khulna, a dengue patient died at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Deceased Shahida Begum, 50, wife of Saidur Rahman of Pirojpur was hospitalised with dengue fever around 8:45pm yesterday, according to a hospital’s doctor.
“She died around 5:30am,” said Dr Sairandranath Biswas, Resident medical officer of the hospital.
Six people have so far died of dengue at the hospital.
On Wednesday, 551 patients were admitted in Dhaka and 606 in other districts outside Dhaka.
Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in a press release issued on Wednesday, said the number of admitted patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals jointly is 5,222.
Since January 1 till August 28, a total of 67,221 people have been affected by dengue.
Among those admitted, a total of 61,826 have been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after treatment.
